Why Bad Things Happen
Why bad things happen to good people is a question many ask. The answer is, no one really has the answer. Bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people; that’s just the way life is. However, the Bible says our reward is in heaven. We should not be concerned with earthly wealth, for all things pass away. Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This verse is so profound and should be considered when we stress about our everyday lives.
The fact is, we can’t always control outside factors. The only thing we can control in our lives is our response to situations, good or bad. Think of the story of Bethany Hamilton. If you’re not sure who Bethany Hamilton is, her story is told in the movie Soul Surfer. In 2003, Bethany was surfing in Kauai when a massive tiger shark attacked her and changed her life forever. She lost her left arm that day, but not her heart. The challenges that were to come challenged Bethany’s faith. Yet, she did not give up. Bethany returned to her board less than a month after the incident. What point am I trying to make in this story? My point is that the worst of things happen to the best of people and that while a situation may appear to be beyond hope, God can turn it around for the better. How amazing to think that God can take a situation that looks absolutely without any hope, and make something glorious of it. From that point on in Bethany’s life, she was a changed person, but I believe she was changed for the better. She was stronger, and her beauty began to shine from the inside out. She went on to inspire so many millions of others in ways big and small. Her autobiography, Soul Surfer, explains more in depth what she went through.
There are those who, when something undesirable or unfortunate happens to them, grow bitter and complain. Or maybe they just become heartbroken. They just can’t understand why God (if they believe in God) would let them go through something so horrible. Loved ones, God allows us to go through certain things to strengthen us. He wants us to grow into creatures who bring him glory and the only way we can do that is by going through the fiery furnaces of this life. There’s no doubt that after losing an arm, Bethany must have questioned God. In the movie, her character says, “How can this be God’s plan for me?” While she had her doubts, she never truly lost her faith and love for God. It’s okay to question God. The important thing to keep in mind, however, is that he will always be there for us and that his love encompasses all. And even if we don’t believe in him, he believes in us.
